The truth behind every brand
FoodLab is an open-source transparency platform built to bring clarity to what is actually in the food supply. It connects fragmented data—scientific studies, chemical analyses, brand testing, and regulatory frameworks—into a single, structured system that anyone can explore. Instead of isolated reports and hard-to-find datasets, FoodLab creates a unified database where every finding is traceable back to its original source, making food safety information more accessible, verifiable, and useful.
At its core, FoodLab provides detailed brand profile pages that aggregate all known chemical detections associated with a brand across multiple studies. Each profile links directly to the underlying research, showing what was tested, what was found, and in what quantities when available. Alongside this, the platform includes a chemical intelligence layer, offering detailed profiles of compounds with CAS numbers, toxicity classifications, and regulatory thresholds. This allows users to move seamlessly from a brand to the specific chemicals detected, and then to the broader scientific and regulatory context behind those findings.
A key feature that sets FoodLab apart is its study and evidence tracking system. Every data point is backed by a published study or official dataset, with direct links to sources such as peer-reviewed journals or government reports. This ensures that the platform remains grounded in verifiable evidence rather than claims or summaries. In parallel, FoodLab introduces a legislative tracking layer, documenting laws and specific provisions that may affect how chemicals are regulated or how liability is applied to manufacturers. This adds an additional dimension of transparency by showing not just what is found in food, but how oversight and accountability are structured.
Built on an open-source foundation under the AGPL-3.0+ license, FoodLab emphasizes transparency, auditability, and community collaboration. The system is designed to evolve through contributions, with structured processes for adding new studies, correcting data, and expanding coverage across brands and food categories. With integrated search, filtering, and visualization tools, FoodLab enables users to explore patterns, compare brands, and understand trends over time—delivering a clear, evidence-based view of food safety with the mission of revealing the truth behind every brand.
