Your Phone, Your Way
SwapCell is a modular, open-source smartphone platform designed to redefine how mobile devices are built, used, and maintained. Instead of treating a phone as a fixed, disposable product, SwapCell is structured as an evolving system where both hardware and software can be replaced, upgraded, and expanded over time. Its goal is to give users full ownership and control over their device while encouraging long-term sustainability and repairability.
At the hardware level, SwapCell is built around interchangeable modules such as the compute unit (CPU and RAM), display, battery, camera systems, storage, and connectivity components. Each module is designed to be independently replaceable, allowing users to upgrade individual parts without replacing the entire phone. This modular approach reduces electronic waste and enables a highly customizable device experience tailored to individual needs.
On the software side, SwapCell runs on a Linux-based mobile operating system with a capability-driven architecture. Instead of relying on traditional device-specific drivers, the system uses a Universal Device Connectivity Layer (UDCL) that identifies hardware based on what it can do rather than what it is. This allows new and future devices to integrate more easily, even if they were not originally designed for the system.
A key feature of SwapCell is its onboard AI system manager, which helps maintain and improve the device over time. The AI can detect newly installed hardware modules, automatically configure drivers, apply system updates, and optimize performance based on user behavior. It also includes safeguards such as cryptographic verification and rollback support to ensure system stability and security.
Overall, SwapCell combines modular hardware, intelligent software automation, and a future-proof connectivity model to create a mobile platform that evolves with its users. It is designed not as a single product, but as a long-term open ecosystem for personal computing freedom, hosted transparently on GitLab under the AGPL 3.0+ license.
