LocaleMaterials

Where Geography Meets Material Science.

LocaleMaterials is an open-source, modular AI platform designed to rethink how the built environment sources and selects materials. Instead of relying on globalized supply chains and generic sustainability labels, it grounds every recommendation in local geography, climate conditions, ecological systems, and real-world availability. The goal is to make construction decisions that are not only environmentally responsible, but also economically rational and practically buildable in the real world.

At its core, LocaleMaterials acts as a decision intelligence system for construction. It evaluates regional soil composition, climate patterns, forestry and agricultural outputs, and industrial byproducts to determine which materials are naturally viable in a given location. These recommendations are scored using a transparent system called LocaleScore™, which measures factors like regeneration rate, embodied energy, transport distance, toxicity, repairability, and long-term environmental impact. This ensures every suggestion is explainable, measurable, and grounded in real data rather than abstract sustainability claims.

Beyond material selection, the platform extends into full construction intelligence. It includes a Climate Adaptation Optimizer that adjusts recommendations based on future environmental conditions, a Code Compliance Translator that maps materials to local building regulations, and a Verified Assembly Library of tested structural systems. It also generates permit-ready construction packages, including bills of materials, build sequences, and engineering documentation, helping bridge the gap between design intent and real-world approval processes.

LocaleMaterials also introduces a regional ecosystem mapping layer that visualizes material abundance, supply gaps, and waste stream opportunities, enabling more localized and circular economies. A failure and performance database captures real-world outcomes from builders to continuously improve system accuracy over time. Additional features like disaster rebuild mode, lifecycle cost modeling, offline field operation, and insurance translation tools expand its use into emergency response, rural development, and large-scale planning contexts.

Built as a fully open-source system under the AGPL 3.0+ license, LocaleMaterials is designed to remain transparent, forkable, and community-driven. Hosted on GitLab, it uses a modular architecture so that each component—whether environmental modeling, AI reasoning, or compliance tooling—can evolve independently while remaining interoperable. The result is a system that treats materials not as isolated products, but as part of a living relationship between land, climate, economy, and construction.
