Structured truth from the court record.
ConstitutionTrace is an open-source civic platform designed to bring structure, clarity, and accountability to the vast body of U.S. court records. At its core, it transforms raw legal documents—such as transcripts, rulings, and filings—into a standardized, searchable system that allows patterns in judicial behavior to be examined across jurisdictions. By combining verified citizen submissions with official documentation, the platform ensures that every entry is grounded in evidence rather than opinion, creating a reliable public dataset for analysis and oversight.
One of its defining features is the use of AI-assisted parsing to convert complex legal text into structured data. When a user uploads a court transcript or ruling, the system extracts key elements like jurisdiction, judge, case details, procedural actions, and sentencing outcomes. It can also highlight potential constitutional issues—such as due process concerns or disproportionate sentencing—while leaving final confirmation to the user. This approach maintains human oversight while dramatically reducing the barrier to contributing meaningful, structured information.
ConstitutionTrace is also built around a comprehensive model of the judicial system, organizing cases by court level—local, state, and federal—and by geographic region. This enables powerful comparisons, such as identifying sentencing disparities between jurisdictions or tracking how often certain types of rulings are overturned on appeal. Over time, the platform can reveal broader trends, helping researchers, journalists, and the public better understand how the law is applied in practice.
Equally important is the platform’s emphasis on privacy and data integrity. Contributors must be verified, but their identities are encrypted and never made public, ensuring both accountability and protection. All submitted documents are cryptographically hashed and timestamped to preserve authenticity, creating a tamper-evident record. Combined with its open-source foundation and transparent governance model, ConstitutionTrace aims to establish a new standard for how judicial data can be collected, structured, and analyzed in a way that supports both public trust and constitutional accountability.
