Body-Mind Awareness
Overview
The Body-Mind Awareness Specification defines a modular framework for connecting physical observations, emotional experiences, lifestyle patterns, and personal reflections within a unified wellness-awareness system.
The specification is designed to help individuals record observations about their bodies, minds, routines, energy, sleep, stress, and overall well-being while identifying relationships and patterns over time. It is intended to support personal awareness and reflection rather than provide medical diagnosis or replace professional medical care.
The specification is designed to be privacy-conscious, extensible, vendor-neutral, and suitable for local-first implementations. Implementations may use the complete specification or adopt individual modules according to their needs.
Goals
The Body-Mind Awareness Specification is designed to:
- Connect physical and emotional observations.
- Provide structured personal wellness journaling.
- Track changes in sleep, energy, stress, and body sensations.
- Identify recurring lifestyle patterns.
- Map relationships between physical and emotional observations.
- Maintain longitudinal personal wellness timelines.
- Support user-controlled reflection and interpretation.
- Provide extensible interfaces for optional integrations.
- Encourage portable and interoperable wellness data.

Privacy & Data Ownership
Body-mind observations can contain highly personal information. Implementations should prioritize user control, privacy, and data portability.
Recommended principles include:
- Personal data should remain under user control.
- Local-first storage should be supported where practical.
- Data should be exportable in documented formats.
- Users should be able to delete their information.
- External integrations should require explicit authorization.
- Implementations should minimize unnecessary data collection.
- Sensitive information should not be shared without user authorization.
- AI processing should be optional where practical.
- Implementations should clearly identify externally processed data.
Correlation and Interpretation
The specification is designed to help users observe relationships within their own data.
A system may identify that two observations repeatedly occur near one another. However, the system should distinguish between:
- Recorded observation
- Statistical association
- User-reported relationship
- Potential correlation
- Causal claim
The specification does not establish medical causation from personal observations.
Implementations that provide analytical features should communicate uncertainty appropriately and avoid presenting automated pattern recognition as professional medical advice.
Interoperability
Implementations should use portable, documented data structures whenever practical.
The specification encourages:
- Structured observation records
- Stable identifiers
- Timestamped events
- Extensible metadata
- Documented import/export formats
- Vendor-neutral data models
- Plugin interoperability
- User-controlled data migration
No proprietary application, wearable manufacturer, cloud provider, AI provider, or database system is required by this specification.
Extensibility
The Body-Mind Awareness Specification is designed to support future capabilities.
New modules and plugins may introduce:
- New observation categories
- New integrations
- New visualization methods
- New analytical capabilities
- New journaling methods
- New interoperability formats
- New privacy controls
Extensions should preserve the core principles of user ownership, modularity, privacy, interoperability, and clear separation between observation and interpretation.
Human-Centered Design
Implementations should treat the user as the primary authority over their personal observations.
The specification encourages systems that:
- Allow users to correct observations.
- Allow users to add context.
- Preserve the distinction between user observations and automated analysis.
- Avoid unnecessary behavioral assumptions.
- Make patterns understandable.
- Provide transparent explanations for automated insights.
- Avoid presenting wellness observations as definitive medical conclusions.
Use Cases
The Body-Mind Awareness Specification can support applications such as:
- Personal wellness journals
- Body-awareness applications
- Sleep and energy journals
- Stress-awareness systems
- Reflective journaling platforms
- Personal pattern-analysis tools
- Wellness dashboards
- Local-first personal data systems
- Wearable-integrated wellness applications
- AI-assisted personal reflection systems
Non-Goals
The specification does not inherently provide:
- Medical diagnosis
- Medical treatment recommendations
- Emergency medical monitoring
- Clinical decision-making
- Guaranteed causal explanations
- Replacement for licensed healthcare professionals
Implementations may integrate with regulated healthcare systems where appropriate, but such functionality is outside the basic scope of this specification.
