Business Commons is a modular, AI-assisted specification for helping businesses redesign how they use space, equipment, labor, capital, inventory, and supply chains. Built around the principle “Shared Resources. Independent Enterprise.”, Business Commons enables existing businesses to explore cooperative, shared-resource, local marketplace, rental, revenue-sharing, and independent business models without requiring a single predetermined ownership structure. The system is designed to help businesses make better use of infrastructure they already have while creating opportunities for independent vendors, workers, producers, manufacturers, and service providers.

The specification includes core modules for business transformation analysis, cooperative structures, local marketplaces, geographic radius and locality, transparency and provenance, space rental, mobile vendors, shift work exchanges, skills and qualifications, repair economies, local manufacturing, cooperative purchasing, shared equipment and tools, inventory and surplus, local supply chains, shared insurance, cooperative financing, legal assistance, shared business services, training and apprenticeships, community needs, and economic impact. These modules can work together to create complete business transformation models or operate independently according to the needs of a particular implementation.

Business Commons is designed to support sector-specific implementations through optional plugin modules. A large retail store could become a local marketplace where growers, clothing makers, artisans, mechanics, and independent businesses rent space, while an automotive facility could provide hourly or monthly service bays, shared tools, equipment, parts purchasing, and workforce exchanges. This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ license and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployments may obtain a Specification Branding License, with fees based on usage, deployment scope, and environment size.
