Observation Without Interpretation.
EarthMetrics is an open-source global database designed to preserve the factual record of Earth’s environmental measurements under the principle Observation Without Interpretation. Its mission is to collect and organize historical and real-time data from weather stations, ocean buoys, satellites, river gauges, seismic networks, and other observation systems into one transparent and publicly accessible platform. Rather than promoting conclusions or narratives, EarthMetrics focuses on recording what was measured, when it was measured, where it was measured, and how it was measured.
One of the platform’s most important features is its immutable raw data layer, where original measurements are preserved exactly as recorded. Records are never silently changed or overwritten, ensuring long-term trust in the dataset. EarthMetrics also includes full data provenance tracking, allowing users to trace every measurement back to its source archive, station, sensor, or instrument. A built-in instrument registry catalogs devices such as thermometers, satellites, buoys, and seismographs, while calibration logs document when instruments were tested or adjusted.
EarthMetrics supports multiple layers of transparency and usability. It stores parallel observations from different sources side-by-side instead of averaging them into a single value, and it separates raw data from adjusted datasets whenever corrections exist. A public query engine allows users to search measurements across time and geography, while historical replay tools make it possible to explore Earth’s recorded conditions at specific moments in history. Interactive dashboards can display live weather, ocean movement, seismic activity, and other observational data in real time.
The project is also built for collaboration and resilience. Through open APIs, researchers, developers, historians, and citizen scientists can contribute new data sources, build tools, and perform independent analysis. Distributed mirror hosting and offline archive downloads help ensure the long-term preservation of the dataset. By combining transparency, historical depth, and global coverage, EarthMetrics aims to become the permanent open record of Earth’s environmental measurements—measuring the planet and recording the facts.
