EdgeGateway is an open modular specification designed to provide a secure foundation for managing edge devices throughout their entire lifecycle. It establishes a trusted gateway between physical devices, software systems, and network environments by combining cryptographic identity, secure onboarding, device management, and policy-driven governance. Built around zero-trust principles, EdgeGateway ensures that devices are verified before gaining access and remain continuously monitored throughout operation.

The specification provides core capabilities for device identity, secure enrollment, trusted attestation, device registration, configuration management, software and firmware updates, access control, monitoring, and transparent auditing. These modules allow organizations to securely deploy and manage IoT devices, industrial systems, AI edge platforms, and distributed computing environments while maintaining interoperability and avoiding vendor lock-in.

EdgeGateway uses a modular architecture that allows deployments to scale from small private edge networks to large federated infrastructures. Optional plugins extend functionality with AI-driven optimization, supply chain security, digital twins, edge federation, marketplace capabilities, remote operations, and event-driven service communication. This approach enables organizations, communities, and developers to build secure, adaptable, and community-controlled edge ecosystems.

This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ license and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployments may obtain a Specification Branding License, with fees based on usage, deployment scope, and environment size.
