FiniteTerm

Financing you can model.

FiniteTerm is a modular, open source specification for deterministic financing across industries and products, excluding education. It is designed around a simple principle: financing you can model. Rather than treating financing as an opaque arrangement determined by disconnected systems, FiniteTerm establishes a structured framework in which financing terms, qualification requirements, payments, costs, asset characteristics, and lifecycle events can be explicitly defined, calculated, and audited.

FiniteTerm uses a modular architecture that separates universal financing rules from industry and product-specific requirements. Each industry and product can have its own module while relying on the same Core Financing framework. A defining feature is the Product Life Expectancy Module, which limits financing to 67% of the expected useful life of the financed product, while establishing an absolute maximum financing term of 30 years. The interest rate remains determined by the financier, allowing different financing providers to use the specification without requiring a standardized rate.

The specification includes core modules for affordability, cost of living, secured financing, insurance, payment variation, cost escalation, asset condition, residual value, depreciation, maintenance, revenue, guarantees, refinancing, early payoff, lifecycle management, portability, explainability, versioning, interoperability, comparison, regulatory rules, human overrides, dispute handling, security, modeling, and settlement. These modules allow financing arrangements to account for both the financial characteristics of an agreement and the real-world characteristics of the product or asset being financed.

FiniteTerm also supports optional plugin modules that extend the system without changing the Core. Plugins can provide scenario analysis, stress testing, inflation modeling, tax modeling, asset valuation, revenue forecasting, insurance risk analysis, maintenance forecasting, data verification, identity verification, AI-assisted analysis, reporting, notifications, and external system integration. This architecture allows FiniteTerm to grow across industries while maintaining a consistent underlying financial model.

The result is a financing framework designed to make financial arrangements more transparent, portable, interoperable, and predictable. FiniteTerm can model financing before execution, compare alternative arrangements, evaluate affordability, account for changing costs, track the complete financing lifecycle, and preserve an auditable record from origination through settlement. By separating deterministic rules from optional modules and financier-specific decisions, FiniteTerm provides a foundation for building financing systems that can be understood and modeled from their inputs rather than relying on opaque processes.

This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ license and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployments may obtain a Specification Branding License, with fees based on usage, deployment scope, and environment size.
