FoodIntel is an open source food intelligence specification designed to help grocery stores, food markets, local growers, and food networks understand and manage food throughout its lifecycle. Using AI-assisted inventory intelligence, FoodIntel can track products from production and delivery through storage, sale, consumption, donation, spoilage, or disposal. Its core purpose is to transform food inventory data into actionable intelligence so organizations can make better purchasing, stocking, freshness, and redistribution decisions. FoodIntel is designed to scale from independent grocers and farmers markets to larger interconnected food networks.
FoodIntel provides product and inventory traceability using SKUs, barcodes, lots, production dates, harvest dates, delivery dates, purchase dates, and expiration dates. The system can monitor quantities, inventory movement, purchasing patterns, consumption rates, product velocity, and changes in available supply. AI can identify products approaching expiration, detect unusual accumulation, forecast demand, and determine when inventory levels may create a risk of spoilage. Rather than treating inventory as a static quantity, FoodIntel maintains a lifecycle view of each product and its movement through the food system.
FoodIntel also connects inventory intelligence with local food sourcing and replacement opportunities. Local growers, farms, producers, bakeries, dairies, and other food businesses can provide product information, availability, production capacity, pricing, delivery schedules, seasonality, and shelf-life information. AI can identify comparable local products that may replace or supplement nationally distributed or major branded products, while evaluating availability, demand, price, supply reliability, capacity, and seasonality. This allows grocers to gradually increase local sourcing while maintaining inventory continuity and identifying opportunities to strengthen regional food networks.

AI can predict expiration risk, excess inventory, demand changes, and potential surplus; prevent waste through purchasing recommendations, inventory alerts, reminders, and automated workflows; and identify viable surplus for redistribution to food banks, soup kitchens, community organizations, and other appropriate recipients. Donation matching intelligence can help locate nearby organizations capable of receiving specific types and quantities of food while preserving human authorization over donation and disposal decisions. Through its modular architecture, FoodIntel can support core inventory intelligence while allowing organizations to add specialized capabilities for local producers, food redistribution, automation, analytics, point-of-sale systems, barcode scanning, and other operational needs.
This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ and is free to use with required Section 7 attribution. Attribution-free deployment is available through a Specification Branding License, with fees based on use and deployment scope.
