GrowLocal

Every Skill Counts. Every Resource Matters.

GrowLocal is an open-source, AI-assisted simulation platform designed to model how real-world towns function, evolve, and sustain themselves. It turns geographic locations into living systems where people, resources, infrastructure, and natural environments interact continuously. Rather than focusing on abstract city-building mechanics, GrowLocal emphasizes grounded, systems-based simulation rooted in real data and real constraints.

At its core, GrowLocal is built around a modular architecture where every major system—economy, environment, workforce, governance, industry, and food production—can operate independently or interconnect through a shared simulation engine. This allows developers and contributors to extend the platform by building new modules without altering the core system. The result is a flexible framework that can evolve over time into a full-scale civilization simulation ecosystem.

One of its defining features is the Micro-Enterprise Emergence System, which allows businesses and services to form organically based on unmet needs, available skills, and local resources. Combined with cooperative economic modeling, this enables towns to develop dynamic, self-adjusting local economies where community-driven enterprises play a central role in survival and growth.

GrowLocal also includes deep environmental and infrastructure simulation, modeling forests, waterways, agriculture, energy systems, and urban development as interconnected systems. These are supported by AI-assisted planning tools that help identify opportunities, predict outcomes, and simulate “what-if” scenarios for development strategies. A built-in memory and historical layer tracks how towns evolve over time, allowing full replay and analysis of decisions and outcomes.

To support transparency and research, GrowLocal includes a full debug and audit layer that exposes simulation logic, system changes, and cause-and-effect relationships. On top of this, a federation layer allows multiple towns to connect, trade, and share resources, creating regional or even global simulation networks. With on-demand procedural graphics, open data integration, and full AGPL 3.0+ compliance, GrowLocal is designed as a public digital commons for understanding how communities can grow and thrive together.
