MeshUnion

MeshUnion is a modular, federated communications and archival system designed for individuals, businesses, organizations, and independent network hosts. Each participant can operate through their own node, maintain local users and policies, and connect with other independently operated nodes when desired. Federation is selective rather than mandatory, allowing organizations to establish controlled business-to-business or peer-to-peer relationships without surrendering control of their own infrastructure. This model follows the broader principle of federation, where independently operated instances interoperate while retaining local autonomy.

MeshUnion is built around complete end-to-end encryption and participant-controlled keys. Conversations, attachments, and archives are intended to remain encrypted so that communication and storage providers do not automatically possess the ability to read participant content. Users can have unique identities controlled by their local host, with support for verified, pseudonymous, or anonymous participation where permitted. Contacts, organizations, conversations, devices, and federation relationships can all be managed independently according to local policies.

A central feature is persistent, searchable communication history. Each participant or organization can maintain authorized archives of its participation, with keyword, participant, organization, conversation, and date-based search. Archives can remain available independently of a particular service provider and can be migrated between compatible infrastructure. MeshUnion also introduces an independent storage model where network hosts with suitable infrastructure can offer encrypted storage through one-time purchases, fixed-duration arrangements, or perpetual storage agreements. Multiple storage providers can be used for redundancy, while ownership and encryption control remain with the data owner.

MeshUnion also includes a modular AI assistance layer that can operate against information the participant is authorized to access. The AI can answer questions about conversations, retrieve historical information, summarize discussions, identify decisions and action items, and assist with archive search. AI access can be controlled at the user, conversation, organization, archive, and federation levels, allowing organizations to use intelligent assistance without automatically exposing their entire communication history.

The overall design separates communication, identity, encryption, federation, synchronization, contacts, archives, search, storage, AI, and administration into independent modules, with optional plugins for additional capabilities such as calendars, task management, document collaboration, voice, video, workflows, translation, analytics, and external services. The result is intended to be a persistent communications network where participants can connect across independently operated infrastructure while retaining control of their keys, conversations, archives, identities, and nodes.

This specification is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later (AGPL-3.0+) and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployment is available through a Specification Branding License, with fees based on deployment scope and network size.
