Robotics Without Limits.
OpenLimb is an open-source modular robotics platform designed to create an accessible foundation for the development of robotic limbs, wearable robotics, exoskeleton systems, and industrial robotic applications. The project focuses on removing barriers to robotics innovation by combining open hardware, open software, artificial intelligence, and transparent design practices into a unified ecosystem.
At its core, OpenLimb provides a modular architecture where robotic components can be designed, shared, improved, and reused. The platform supports interchangeable hardware modules including robotic joints, actuators, sensors, electronics, and structural components. This approach allows creators to build customized systems for different needs, from affordable assistive devices and prosthetics to industrial automation and human augmentation technologies.
OpenLimb integrates AI-assisted engineering tools to help users design and optimize robotic systems. The platform includes intelligent design assistance, motion learning, digital twins, simulation tools, and manufacturing guidance. AI can help recommend components, improve efficiency, reduce costs, and create alternative engineering approaches when design challenges arise.
To support open innovation, OpenLimb includes legal AI and provenance systems that help protect contributors and maintain transparent design histories. The Legal AI layer assists with patent analysis, prior-art discovery, licensing compliance, and conflict avoidance, while the provenance layer records the origin, evolution, and verification of hardware designs, software, AI models, and manufacturing processes.
The platform also expands beyond robotic limbs through wearable robotics and industrial modules. OpenLimb supports exoskeleton systems for mobility assistance and worker augmentation, as well as industrial robotic arms, adaptive grippers, and specialized robotic tools. By enabling modular manufacturing, local production, and community collaboration, OpenLimb creates a pathway toward affordable, repairable, and continuously improving robotics.
