The Open Source Core for Custom Transportation Systems.

TransitMemory is an open source specification for building custom transportation management systems for schools, transportation companies, childcare organizations, universities, businesses, camps, nonprofits, and other organizations. Its purpose is to provide a standardized Core that organizations can build upon while allowing them to develop their own modules, workflows, communication systems, and operational tools without modifying the Core.

TransitMemory provides Core modules for route management, stop management, rider scheduling, daily stop skip requests, driver operations, vehicle-aware routing, estimated time of arrival, traffic awareness, route optimization, time optimization, safety constraints, route records, and institutional transportation memory. Parents or authorized customers can notify an organization that a rider will not need transportation for a particular trip, allowing the active daily route to be adjusted without changing the rider’s permanent assignment.

A central feature of TransitMemory is its ability to preserve operational knowledge. Drivers can record information about difficult turns, restricted roads, construction, recurring congestion, unsafe stopping locations, low-clearance areas, and other transportation conditions. Historical route records can capture planned and actual routes, travel times, delays, stop dwell times, route deviations, and driver observations. This information can be used to improve future ETA calculations and generate recommendations for more efficient routes and schedules.

TransitMemory also separates the transportation Core from optional capabilities. Real-time bus tracking, GPS hardware, fleet tracking, mapping services, traffic data providers, weather services, SMS, email, push notifications, telematics, and AI route analysis can be added through optional plugin modules. Organizations can also create customized downloadable communication modules for parents, guardians, customers, riders, or employees, including branded mobile and web applications.

The modular architecture allows each organization to build the transportation system it actually needs while maintaining interoperability with the TransitMemory Core. The result is a transportation infrastructure specification that can learn from real-world operations, preserve institutional knowledge, improve routing decisions over time, and provide organizations with the flexibility to develop their own transportation applications and services.

This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ license and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployments may obtain a Specification Branding License, with fees based on usage, deployment scope, and environment size.
