VINGuard is an open-source vehicle transparency platform built to make used car buying and selling more honest, verifiable, and data-driven. Instead of relying on fragmented reports or incomplete listings, VINGuard centers every vehicle around its VIN, creating a unified identity layer that connects all available history data into one structured profile. The goal is to reduce uncertainty in the used car market by giving buyers a clear view of what they are actually purchasing before any transaction occurs.

At its core, VINGuard aggregates and standardizes key vehicle history data, including accident records, title status, ownership history, mileage consistency, recall information, and known liens. It integrates with external data sources where available, such as National Motor Vehicle Title Information System for title verification and recall databases like National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This allows the platform to surface inconsistencies, hidden damage indicators, and potential red flags that are often missed in traditional listings.

Beyond static reporting, VINGuard introduces a dynamic transparency system powered by modular AI components. Computer vision models such as YOLO help analyze vehicle images for damage or inconsistencies, while large language models like Llama assist in interpreting listings, detecting suspicious patterns, and improving data normalization. These systems contribute to a unified Transparency Score that helps users quickly understand the overall trustworthiness of a vehicle.

The platform is also designed with a modular, extensible architecture, allowing contributors to build independent components such as data connectors, scoring systems, inspection modules, and marketplace tools. Mapping and geographic insights are supported through tools like OpenStreetMap, enabling users to visualize ownership history and regional exposure risks. Combined with its open-source nature and AGPL-3.0+ licensing model, VINGuard ensures that improvements to vehicle transparency remain accessible, auditable, and community-driven.
