BalanceForward

Built Around the Life Behind the Loan.

BalanceForward is an open source deterministic financing specification for businesses developing debt refinancing and secured consumer financing systems. It provides a modular framework for evaluating realistic repayment capacity, calculating sustainable loan parameters, incorporating geographic cost of living, and securing financing through qualifying collateral.

BalanceForward is designed around the principle that financing should be based on the borrower’s sustainable financial reality rather than simply maximizing the amount a borrower can qualify for. The specification combines income verification, Qualifying Repayment Income (QRI), area-based cost of living analysis, repayment feasibility, debt verification, collateral valuation, and deterministic loan parameters into a structured financing framework.

The specification establishes a fixed 5% interest rate, a maximum 50% collateral advance rate, and a maximum 20-year loan term as core parameters of the BalanceForward financing model. These parameters are applied through deterministic rules designed to create predictable financing outcomes while maintaining a substantial collateral and repayment-capacity framework.

BalanceForward is designed for businesses, financial institutions, fintech organizations, lenders, credit unions, and other organizations that want to implement a transparent and modular financing architecture. Implementations may use independent data providers, financial infrastructure, custodians, servicing systems, and other technologies while conforming to the specification’s defined interfaces and requirements.

Specification Goals

  • Create a deterministic framework for consumer debt refinancing.
  • Evaluate repayment feasibility using actual financial circumstances.
  • Calculate Qualifying Repayment Income using a standardized tax allocation.
  • Incorporate geographic cost of living into affordability analysis.
  • Prevent collateral availability from overriding repayment capacity.
  • Convert qualifying revolving debt into structured amortizing financing.
  • Establish predictable loan rates, payments, and terms.
  • Provide a maximum 50% advance rate against qualifying collateral.
  • Limit loan terms to a maximum of 20 years.
  • Support modular implementations without requiring vendor lock-in.
  • Provide businesses with an extensible open source financing specification.

Core Modules

Income Verification Module

The Income Verification Module establishes the borrower’s verified recurring gross income.

Features:

  • Verified gross income calculation.
  • Recurring income identification.
  • Income-source classification.
  • Income consistency analysis.
  • Income verification requirements.
  • Income documentation handling.
  • Standardized income inputs for downstream modules.
  • Support for configurable business verification sources.

Qualifying Repayment Income Module

The Qualifying Repayment Income Module establishes the standardized income amount available for repayment analysis.

Features:

  • Gross income intake.
  • Fixed 33% tax-liability allocation.
  • Calculation of Qualifying Repayment Income.
  • Standardized QRI output.
  • Consistent treatment of income across applications.
  • Deterministic calculation rules.
  • Auditability of QRI calculations.

The core QRI calculation applies a 33% allocation for tax liabilities, leaving 67% of verified gross income as Qualifying Repayment Income.

Cost of Living Feasibility Module

The Cost of Living Feasibility Module determines a realistic baseline cost of living for the borrower’s geographic area and household circumstances.

Features:

  • Geographic cost of living analysis.
  • Area-level housing costs.
  • Utility cost analysis.
  • Food cost analysis.
  • Transportation cost analysis.

  • Household-size adjustments.
  • Geographic normalization.
  • Current-cost data requirements.
  • Data freshness requirements.
  • Area-average calculation.
  • Cost-of-living baseline generation.

The module is intended to prevent loan approval decisions from relying solely on borrower-reported expenses when those expenses materially understate the reasonable cost of maintaining basic living requirements in the borrower’s area.

Actual Expense Verification Module

The Actual Expense Verification Module evaluates the borrower’s documented recurring expenses against the applicable cost of living baseline.

Features:

  • Housing expense verification.
  • Utility verification.

  • Sustainable payment analysis.
  • Payment feasibility determination.

Deterministic Financing Model

BalanceForward establishes financing through a sequence of independent constraints.

Verified Gross Income

→ 33% Tax Liability Allocation

→ Qualifying Repayment Income

→ Cost of Living Feasibility

→ Verified Required Obligations

→ Available Repayment Capacity

→ Sustainable Payment Capacity

→ 5% Fixed-Rate Loan Calculation

→ Maximum 20-Year Term

→ 50% Collateral Advance Constraint

→ Qualifying Debt Constraint

→ Final Loan Parameters

The final loan must satisfy all applicable constraints.

Collateral availability must not be used to justify a loan payment that the borrower cannot realistically sustain.

Fixed Financing Parameters

BalanceForward defines the following core parameters:

  • Interest Rate: 5% fixed.
  • Maximum Collateral Advance Rate: 50%.
  • Maximum Loan Term: 20 years.
  • Tax Liability Allocation: 33% of verified gross income.
  • Qualifying Repayment Income: 67% of verified gross income before additional affordability deductions.
  • Loan Purpose: Qualifying debt refinancing.
  • Loan Structure: Secured, closed-end, amortizing financing.

Implementations may establish additional underwriting requirements, provided those requirements do not conflict with the core specification.

Payment Feasibility

Payment feasibility is determined using the borrower’s financial circumstances rather than collateral alone.

The system evaluates:

  • Verified income.
  • Tax liability allocation.
  • Geographic cost of living.
  • Household circumstances.
  • Verified actual expenses.
  • Required existing obligations.
  • Available repayment capacity.
  • Proposed loan payment.
  • Collateral coverage.
  • Loan term.

The objective is to determine a payment that is realistically sustainable for the borrower while maintaining defined collateral protection for the lender.

Direct Debt Refinancing

BalanceForward is designed to refinance qualifying debt rather than provide unrestricted cash.

Implementations should support:

  • Verified creditor identification.
  • Verified outstanding balances.
  • Verified payoff amounts.
  • Direct creditor payments.
  • Payoff confirmation.
  • Refinanced-account tracking.
  • Post-refinance balance verification.

This structure is intended to ensure that refinancing proceeds accomplish their stated debt-reduction purpose.
