Civic infrastructure for everyone.
CommonsProtocol is an open-source civic transparency and public accountability platform designed to make the financial and operational structures of political campaigns, public offices, and civic organizations fully visible and auditable. It replaces fragmented, delayed reporting systems with a unified public ledger that records donations, expenditures, and governance-related financial activity in real time. The goal is to bring clarity and trust back into systems where money and public power intersect.
At its core, CommonsProtocol is built around an append-only, cryptographically verifiable ledger that records every financial event in a transparent and tamper-resistant format. Donations, vendor payments, reimbursements, payroll, and budget allocations are all tracked in a structured system that can be inspected, analyzed, and exported by the public. This creates a continuous audit environment rather than periodic, hard-to-interpret disclosures.
Beyond the ledger, CommonsProtocol includes a modular set of features for campaign finance management, public budgeting, vendor transparency, and compliance reporting. Campaigns and institutions can manage fundraising, track spending categories, and generate regulatory filings while maintaining full public visibility. Vendor and contractor modules expose relationships between organizations and the recipients of public or campaign funds, helping surface potential conflicts of interest and financial dependencies.
The platform also includes a public oversight layer that allows citizens to monitor financial activity, receive alerts, and analyze funding patterns. Built-in analytics tools help visualize donor influence, spending trends, and budget allocations, while AI-assisted systems can detect anomalies or irregular financial behavior. With federated architecture support, CommonsProtocol can be deployed by municipalities, nonprofits, or campaigns independently while still participating in a broader network of transparent civic infrastructure.

- CommonsProtocol – An open-source civic transparency platform that provides a federated, auditable public ledger for campaign finance, government spending, and civic accountability systems.
The design inspiration for CommonsProtocol was drawn in part from the principles behind Open Collective, particularly its approach to public, itemized financial transparency for community-driven projects. This foundation was later expanded into a broader civic context focused on governance, elections, and public institutions. The concept was originally articulated in greater detail in a Facebook post dated May 26, 2025, where the idea of extending open financial ledgers from open-source communities into political and governmental systems was explored, emphasizing real-time visibility, public accountability, and the need for transparent infrastructure in democratic funding systems.
