Building a shared network for resilient food systems.
FoodMesh is an open-source, modular logistics specification designed to create a shared network for resilient food systems. It connects small farmers, independent trucking operators, distributors, and buyers through a decentralized transportation framework that improves access to markets while maintaining transparency throughout the movement of agricultural goods.
FoodMesh enables farms of all sizes to participate in regional and national distribution by supporting multi-farm load consolidation, where individual producers can contribute partial shipments to shared truck capacity. Each load can be documented with photographs, product information, weight records, and verified pickup and delivery locations, creating a complete digital history from origin to destination.
The specification includes core logistics capabilities such as GPS shipment tracking, truck-aware routing, fuel and toll optimization, mileage tracking, fleet management, and delivery verification. Its routing system is designed specifically for commercial vehicles by considering truck dimensions, road restrictions, bridge limitations, and destination accessibility to help drivers safely and efficiently reach their destinations.
FoodMesh is built around modular architecture, allowing organizations to add optional capabilities such as artificial intelligence route optimization, load matching, marketplace systems, cold chain monitoring, analytics, and payment integrations. By providing open infrastructure rather than a centralized platform, FoodMesh allows communities, cooperatives, and businesses to build transportation networks that strengthen local food economies and improve supply chain resilience.
This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ license and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployments may obtain a Specification Branding License, with fees based on usage, deployment scope, and environment size.
