Turn Any Input Into Any Action.
KeyMod is a universal input remapping and macro automation specification designed to give users complete programmable control over their keyboards, mice, controllers, and other supported input devices. With the principle “Turn Any Input Into Any Action,” KeyMod allows individual keys, buttons, wheels, movements, combinations, and other recognized inputs to be temporarily or permanently assigned to custom actions while leaving unassigned inputs unchanged. The specification is designed to be vendor-neutral, allowing the same concepts and automation definitions to work across different hardware and software environments.
KeyMod provides a powerful macro engine for creating automated sequences from keyboard and mouse actions. Users can record input events, including keystrokes, button presses, mouse movements, clicks, scrolling, modifiers, and timing intervals, then edit and replay those recordings as macros. Macros can contain delays, loops, conditions, variables, nested actions, simultaneous inputs, repetitions, and other control-flow features, enabling everything from simple shortcuts to complex automated workflows. Mouse movement recording can optionally preserve paths, timing, direction, and click events for accurate playback.
A layered input system allows KeyMod assignments to be activated only when needed. Users can create profiles and input layers for different applications, games, workflows, devices, or situations, with support for hold, toggle, timed, one-shot, conditional, and application-aware activation. Temporary assignments can override the normal behavior of a key or button and automatically restore the original mapping when the layer, profile, or session ends. KeyMod also supports cross-device automation, allowing an input from one device to trigger an action on another, such as using a keyboard key to control a mouse action.
KeyMod is designed with safety, reliability, privacy, and extensibility as core principles. Emergency stops, automatic input release, timeout controls, loop limits, stuck-input detection, crash recovery, configuration validation, and fail-safe restoration help prevent unintended input behavior. Recording and logging controls can provide explicit capture states, selective exclusions, local storage, and configurable retention. The specification can also support plugins, scripting, command-line control, APIs, virtual input devices, custom triggers, device adapters, and additional automation capabilities, providing a foundation for applications ranging from gaming and productivity to accessibility and advanced human-computer interaction.
