Knowledge Continuum is a modular open source specification for building structured knowledge bases, datasets, and AI models that can be organized, divided, distributed, and independently managed at multiple levels. The architecture is designed to operate across every information sector, allowing the same framework to support education, science, medicine, law, finance, engineering, agriculture, business, government, technology, the arts, and any other knowledge domain. Knowledge can be organized into sectors, domains, subjects, topics, and four progressive information levels ranging from elementary knowledge through secondary, undergraduate, and graduate or higher education.

The specification enables large knowledge bases, datasets, and models to be broken down into independently addressable shards and smaller knowledge assets. Each shard can maintain its own identity, metadata, provenance, version history, dependencies, quality information, licensing information, and access rules while remaining connected to the larger knowledge structure from which it originated. This modular architecture allows users to select, combine, update, distribute, or replace individual portions without requiring the entire knowledge base or model to be treated as a single indivisible resource.

Knowledge Continuum includes core modules for knowledge organization, dataset construction, model construction, sharding, asset management, provenance, versioning, licensing, access control, validation, composition, and monetization. Every core module is designed to be available across every information sector and knowledge level, creating a consistent architecture for building specialized or comprehensive knowledge systems. Individual sectors, subjects, educational levels, datasets, models, shards, and assets can therefore be managed independently while retaining their relationships and lineage within the broader system.

The specification also establishes a framework for treating knowledge components as independently usable and potentially monetizable assets. Creators and rights holders can define how complete knowledge bases or individual shards and assets are accessed, licensed, distributed, combined, or monetized, including free, paid, subscription, usage-based, API, institutional, or other access models. Knowledge Continuum is built around a simple lifecycle: Build It. Shard It. License It. Monetize It., providing an open source foundation for creating a scalable, composable, sector-independent ecosystem for knowledge, datasets, and machine intelligence.
