ModelSignature is an open specification for AI model registry and lifecycle management that establishes a permanent, verifiable record for every machine learning and generative AI model. Rather than functioning as a simple inventory, it defines a standardized architecture for managing the complete lifecycle of AI assets—from initial registration and experimentation through validation, deployment, monitoring, retirement, and archival. By maintaining immutable records of model versions, metadata, approvals, and deployment history, ModelSignature provides organizations with a trusted source of truth for AI governance.

The specification emphasizes provenance, reproducibility, and interoperability. Every model can be associated with detailed metadata, training configurations, dataset lineage, evaluation results, and deployment artifacts, making it possible to understand exactly how a model was created, modified, and used over time. Comprehensive version tracking and lifecycle management allow teams to compare releases, roll back to previous versions, and maintain complete historical records without losing traceability.

ModelSignature also includes a robust governance framework designed for enterprise and regulated environments. Built-in approval workflows, policy enforcement, audit logging, and security controls help ensure that only validated and authorized models progress through each stage of the lifecycle. This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ license and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployments may obtain a Specification Branding License, with fees based on usage, deployment scope, and environment size.
