PassTheMic is a voice-first AI language tutor and conversation coach designed to teach people more than vocabulary and grammar. Its core philosophy is captured in its tagline, “Better Words. Better Manners. Better Conversations.” The system combines language instruction with practical communication skills, helping students develop speaking, listening, questioning, turn-taking, politeness, gratitude, cultural awareness, and conversational reciprocity. This distinguishes PassTheMic from voice language tutors that primarily focus on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and conversational practice.

The system is built around a fully voice-driven experience and gives students substantial control over how they learn. Students can adjust the AI’s speech speed, response timing, coaching intensity, dialect, accent, and conversational difficulty. PassTheMic is also designed to tune itself to the student’s own speech patterns, recognizing dialect, regional vocabulary, pronunciation, cadence, slang, and legitimate linguistic variations rather than automatically treating differences from standardized language as mistakes. Speech-speed analysis can help students gradually progress from slow instructional speech to natural and eventually native-speed conversation.

A major feature is the selectable AI character system. Students can choose different instructors, conversation coaches, conversation partners, and evaluators, each with their own voice, personality, teaching style, coaching approach, dialect, accent, and conversational style. A structured instructor might focus on grammar and vocabulary, while a friendly conversation partner emphasizes natural dialogue and a dedicated coach focuses on listening, interruptions, follow-up questions, conversational balance, and the central “Pass the Mic” principle. The platform can also provide realistic roleplay for situations such as travel, work, networking, friendships, difficult conversations, interviews, and cross-cultural interactions.

Beyond language fluency, PassTheMic teaches students how to become better participants in human conversation. Its conversation intelligence can identify patterns such as excessive interruption, self-focused responses, story one-upmanship, failure to ask follow-up questions, topic hijacking, and failure to return attention to another speaker. The Manners Module teaches politeness, courtesy, respectful disagreement, boundaries, and social etiquette, while the Gratitude Module teaches students how to express appreciation, receive compliments, acknowledge effort, and respond graciously. Together, these features make PassTheMic a broader communication system: an AI that teaches students not simply how to speak a language, but how to use that language to listen, connect, respect, appreciate, and make room for other people.

This specification is released under AGPL-3.0+ and is free to use with required Section 7 attribution. Attribution-free deployment is available through a Specification Branding License, with fees based on deployment scope and network size.
