Secure Journal Engine

Secure Journal Engine is a modular open source specification for building private, secure, and extensible personal journaling systems. It establishes a foundational architecture for capturing personal thoughts, reflections, memories, and experiences while keeping privacy and user ownership at the center of the system. The specification supports text, voice, and multimedia journaling, allowing implementations to preserve different forms of personal expression within a unified journal history.

The core architecture includes journal entries, multimedia and voice capture, organization, search and indexing, reflection prompts, long-term journal history, and secure storage. Users can timestamp entries, apply tags and categories, create personal themes, search their journal history, and preserve their reflections over time. The specification is designed to support local-first and self-hosted implementations while remaining independent of any particular programming language, database, cloud provider, operating system, or user interface.

Secure Journal Engine also provides an extensible plugin architecture for capabilities that do not need to be part of the core. Optional modules can add AI-assisted reflection, sentiment and emotion analysis, memory graphs, journal analytics, enhanced encryption, import and migration, calendar and timeline integration, reminders, multimedia capture, backup and archival capabilities, and controlled sharing. Plugins are designed to remain modular, permission-aware, and subordinate to the user’s control over their personal journal data.

A major feature of the specification is its emphasis on long-term personal memory preservation. Stable identifiers, structured data, metadata preservation, export capabilities, migration support, backups, and archival mechanisms help ensure that journal histories remain accessible as software and platforms change. AI and other automated capabilities are deliberately optional, ensuring that the fundamental journaling system remains useful without requiring external services or automated analysis.

This specification is released under the AGPL-3.0+ license and is free to use with required attribution. Attribution-free deployments may obtain a Specification Branding License, with fees based on usage, deployment scope, and environment size.
