VitalPattern Specification

Bringing Your Health Patterns Together.

Overview

VitalPattern is an AI-assisted health, nutrition, fitness, and personal health-data intelligence specification designed to bring a user’s health patterns together in one continuously evolving profile.

Medical Safety and Scope

VitalPattern is an AI-assisted system for health, nutrition, fitness, and personal health-data management. It is intended to assist users in organizing information, identifying patterns, understanding nutritional and activity data, and making informed decisions about their personal health routines.

VitalPattern must not present itself as a physician, dietitian, trainer, therapist, or other qualified healthcare professional. Each implementation must clearly communicate its intended use and applicable regulatory status.

Medical Information Boundaries

  • The system may analyze food, nutrition, calories, macronutrients, micronutrients, exercise, activity, weight, goals, health information, laboratory results, health trends, and connected-device measurements.
  • Recommendations must not be presented as a diagnosis, prescription, or substitute for professional medical judgment.
  • Laboratory results must preserve the original value, unit, reference range, date, and source when available.
  • The system must distinguish user-entered information from AI-extracted, AI-estimated, and AI-interpreted information.
  • Nutritional recommendations may identify foods relevant to documented nutritional gaps or dietary considerations.
  • The system must not claim that a food or dietary recommendation diagnoses, cures, or treats a disease or medical condition.
  • The system must not guarantee that a food recommendation will return a health measurement to a particular range.
  • Potentially concerning measurements must trigger appropriate medical or emergency guidance rather than relying solely on routine nutrition or exercise recommendations.
  • Recorded medications or professional instructions must not be used as a basis for prescribing, changing, starting, or stopping treatment.
  • The system must not override instructions from qualified healthcare professionals.

Recommendation Transparency

Recommendations should communicate, where applicable:

  • The user’s relevant goal
  • Relevant nutrition information
  • Relevant activity information
  • Relevant health or laboratory information
  • Data sources
  • Measured versus estimated information
  • Assumptions
  • Uncertainty
  • Recommendation rationale

When information is missing, ambiguous, or unreliable, the system should request clarification or clearly identify a qualified estimate rather than inventing information.

Exercise Safety

Exercise recommendations should consider available information about:

  • Age
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Fitness level
  • Conditioning
  • Exercise history
  • Current activity
  • Exercise intensity
  • Exercise duration
  • Goals
  • Available equipment
  • Known limitations
  • Relevant health information

The system should avoid recommendations that disregard documented limitations or create unnecessary risk.

Calorie Compensation

When a user records an intake above a selected energy target, VitalPattern may provide informational estimates of additional activity that could affect energy balance.

Such recommendations should account for:

  • Recovery
  • Exercise load
  • Fitness level
  • Injury or activity limitations
  • Current activity
  • User goals
  • The size and persistence of the deviation

Large deviations may be distributed across multiple days rather than prompting excessive exercise or restrictive eating.

Weight Management Safety

The system should distinguish among:

  • User-selected goals
  • AI-generated targets
  • Measured weight
  • Historical progress
  • Current trends
  • Estimated future progress

The system should avoid unsafe or extreme weight-management recommendations and should encourage professional oversight when the available information indicates that it may be appropriate.

Rebaseline Safety

When persistent imbalance or significant deviation is identified over the defined evaluation period, the system may establish a new baseline based on the user’s current state.

Rebaselining must:

  • Preserve historical records
  • Preserve previous plans
  • Establish a clearly identified new baseline
  • Recalculate applicable targets
  • Reassess goals
  • Avoid punitive compensation
  • Avoid excessive exercise recommendations
  • Avoid extreme dietary restriction

Human-in-the-Loop Principle

Users must remain able to review, correct, reject, override, and modify AI-generated information and recommendations.

VitalPattern should support professional review where appropriate and must not present automated output as having authority greater than the underlying data or the qualified professionals reviewing it.

Urgent and Emergency Situations

VitalPattern must not attempt to manage potentially urgent or emergency health situations through routine nutrition or exercise recommendations.

When available information indicates a potentially urgent situation, the system should direct the user toward appropriate immediate medical assistance.
