The universe of community-owned games.
GameCommons is an open-source, federated multiplayer gaming platform designed to give communities complete ownership of their online game worlds. Rather than relying on centralized platforms, GameCommons enables anyone to create, host, and manage independent game servers that can optionally connect through an open federation protocol. Inspired by decentralized platforms, every GameCommons instance remains independently operated while still being discoverable and capable of participating in a larger ecosystem of community-owned games. The project is built around a modular architecture, allowing administrators to host a single game or an entire collection of games using a common set of shared infrastructure services.
At its core, GameCommons provides a comprehensive platform for multiplayer game hosting through built-in services such as federation, authentication, matchmaking, permissions, administration, analytics, federated chat, localization, and web portal management. Every game is packaged as an independent module that defines its own networking requirements, storage needs, matchmaking behavior, and federation capabilities. An Event Bus & Service Mesh serves as the platform’s communication backbone, allowing game modules and core services to exchange events in real time while remaining loosely coupled. This architecture makes it easy for developers to build new games, extend existing functionality, or integrate additional services without modifying the core platform.
GameCommons also introduces a sustainability model that helps communities fund and grow their servers without sacrificing independence. The platform includes core support for funding and grant management, treasury management, and configurable rewards systems that allow server operators to distribute incentives to players, contributors, moderators, developers, and event organizers. Optional plugins provide additional capabilities such as sponsorship management, advertising, marketplaces, tournaments, voice communication, AI moderation, anti-cheat systems, reputation management, and cross-game services. Every server retains complete control over which modules are installed, ensuring that communities can tailor their environment to their specific needs.
Designed with openness, extensibility, and long-term preservation in mind, GameCommons supports a wide variety of game genres, from board games and strategy titles to persistent MMORPGs, sandbox worlds, educational games, and competitive esports. By combining federation, modular game architecture, sustainable funding infrastructure, and community governance, GameCommons provides a foundation for a decentralized gaming ecosystem where players, creators, and administrators collaborate to build the next generation of community-owned multiplayer experiences.
