LibreOrbit is an open-source, modular satellite networking operating system designed to provide an open infrastructure layer for connecting satellites, ground stations, sensors, edge devices, and communities. Built around interoperability and decentralized design principles, LibreOrbit enables organizations, researchers, and developers to create, manage, and expand satellite communication networks without being locked into a single provider or platform.
The platform uses a modular architecture where every capability can be deployed as an independent component. Modules can be added, removed, or customized based on operational needs, allowing LibreOrbit to support everything from small community ground stations and research projects to large-scale satellite network operations. This approach enables flexible deployments while encouraging collaboration and shared improvements across the ecosystem.
LibreOrbit includes modules for satellite connectivity, ground station management, software-defined radio integration, protocol adaptation, telemetry monitoring, mission operations, and secure communications. The platform supports satellite discovery, orbital data management, data exchange, edge computing, and distributed networking capabilities designed for modern space communication environments.
Advanced features include AI-assisted satellite operations, autonomous mission support, predictive maintenance, signal analysis, network optimization, and intelligent routing. Optional AI modules can help operators analyze telemetry, schedule communications, detect anomalies, and improve network efficiency while maintaining transparency and modular deployment.
LibreOrbit also provides infrastructure for emergency communications, scientific research, weather monitoring, remote connectivity, and community-operated satellite networks. Through federation capabilities, independent operators, universities, governments, and organizations can connect their infrastructure into larger collaborative networks while maintaining control over their own systems.
This specification is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later (AGPL-3.0+) and may be used freely with required attribution under Section 7. A Specification Branding License is available for attribution-free deployments, with fees based on usage, scope, and deployment size.
